When can you enroll in ACA coverage?
The Marketplace has specific windows when you can sign up, change, or cancel your plan. Here's what you need to know.
Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
The annual Open Enrollment window runs from November 1 through January 15 each year. This is when anyone can enroll in or switch Marketplace plans for the upcoming coverage year.
- Plans selected by December 15 start coverage January 1.
- Plans selected December 16 – January 15 start coverage February 1.
- You can enroll even if you've never had coverage before.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Outside of Open Enrollment, you can still enroll if you experience a qualifying life event. You typically have 60 days from the event to apply.
- Loss of health coverage (job-based, Medicaid, CHIP).
- Household changes: marriage, divorce, birth, adoption.
- Moving to a new home in a different ZIP or county.
- Change in income that affects subsidy eligibility.
